If the Big XII had the SEC’s three way tie breaker rule, Texas would be going to the Big XII championship game.
SEC Rule: The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC Championship Game.
I know that hindsight is 20-20, but if another conference has a better rule like this, how does the Big XII have the rule it has? Did the powers that be just never dream that there would be a three way tie?

At risk of sounding blasphemous(?), I actually like the Big XII rule better than the SEC’s. I know it will probably hurt us this year, and I hate that we beat OU and it doesn’t matter, but it could happen where us and Tech are within 5 spots of OU, then how do you argue for us and not them. All of the extra little clauses to every rule don’t actually solve the root problem of not having a playoff, and they serve to make everything way more complicated.
Now, having said that, I think the bigger issue is why the Big XII and SEC have different rules pertaining to the same situation. This goes along with my beef that not all conferences have a championship game, but if we are competing for the same trophy, why do we have different rules for different conferences? In my opinion, all the conferences need to have the same rules and formats. And that’s not a money thing, so it shouldn’t be difficult to change. Go Cowboys and Bears (the college versions)!
