Texas to play Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl

The University of Texas Longhorns finished the 2008 regular season No. 3 in the BCS behind Oklahoma and Florida and will play the Ohio State University Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl on January 5, 2009. This will be the third match-up between the Longhorns and Buckeyes in the last four years, each team having won one of the early games. Regardless of who the fans, players, and coaches feel about whether or not Texas was screwed by the system, it’s time to whip off the blackboard and start preparing for the No. 10, two loss, Buckeyes. If these ‘Horns can prepare like the team that destroyed Arizona State last year, the Fiesta Bowl should be a fun one to watch. I truly believe that this Longhorns team can beat anyone in college football with a healthy, rested, team.

The other BCS games are as follows: Oklahoma vs. Florida (national championship), Alabama vs. Utah (Sugar Bowl), USC vs. Penn State (Rose Bowl), and Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati (Orange Bowl).

  1. It’s apparent to me that Texas fans are suffering from ‘Irritable Bowl Syndrome’ and need to get over it.

  2. The argument made by Texas fans is very valid, as represented by the fact that Bob Stoops must keep explaining why his team deserved to go to the Big XII championship game and why his team deserves to play for the BCS national championship.

A true fan, whether burnt orange or any other color, should not argue that it is “unfair” that oklahoma gets to play for the championship, because they met the requirements. But a true fan should argue for a better system; and the lack of even a good system is represented by years of turmoil (e.g. USC AP National champions in 2003, Auburn 2004). This year’s Longhorns are just offering another example for the need of a better system.

I’m sure any irritable bowl syndrome will be cured the evening of January 8, when the ‘Horns will be on their third day of celebrating their win over Ohio State, and Big Game Bob will be trying to explain why he lost his fifth BCS game in a row.
